Working Together to Keep Our Community Clean
Following the beach cleanup in Okinawa featured in our previous article, we are pleased to share highlights from the AEC Zero Waste Action held at our Iwakuni Office.
In recognition of Japan’s “Zero Waste Day” on May 30, AEC employees joined members of the Asahi Daini Neighborhood Association for a community cleanup activity in the area surrounding the office and local community center. Approximately 30 employees and community members participated in the event.
The activity provided an opportunity not only to improve the local environment, but also to strengthen connections between AEC employees and the community that supports our daily operations.
Partnering with the Local Community
The event began with welcoming remarks from the chairman of the Asahi Daini Neighborhood Association, who expressed his appreciation for the strong employee participation despite the activity taking place on a holiday.
He also shared his hope that AEC and the neighborhood association would continue working together through future community initiatives and local events.
Participants then divided into several groups and carried out cleanup activities in designated areas, including roads surrounding the office, nearby streets, and areas around the community center.
With favorable weather throughout the day, participants worked side by side while exchanging greetings and conversations with local residents.
More Than Picking Up Litter
As the cleanup got underway, participants quickly noticed something unexpected—there was very little litter to collect.
This reflected the ongoing efforts of local residents to maintain a clean and welcoming environment throughout the neighborhood.
As a result, much of the day’s work focused on removing weeds and clearing overgrown vegetation rather than collecting trash. Using rakes and gardening tools provided by neighborhood association members, participants worked together to improve the appearance and accessibility of public areas.
The activity also offered an opportunity to recognize the everyday efforts required to maintain a safe and pleasant community environment—work that often goes unnoticed by those who pass through these spaces each day.
A Spirit of Teamwork
Throughout the activity, participants remained mindful of safety, communicating with one another whenever vehicles approached nearby work areas.
The spirit of cooperation extended beyond assigned responsibilities. Employees who completed work in their designated areas ahead of schedule voluntarily moved to support other teams, helping ensure that the entire cleanup effort progressed smoothly.
Without being asked, participants naturally stepped forward to assist one another, creating a positive and collaborative atmosphere throughout the event.
The cleanup also provided valuable opportunities for employees and local residents to connect, exchange ideas, and learn more about the community and its ongoing activities.
Strengthening Local Connections
While improving the local environment was an important objective, the event also served as an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between AEC and the community.
As a company whose business activities are supported every day by the communities in which we operate, AEC recognizes the importance of being an active and responsible community partner.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the members of the Asahi Daini Neighborhood Association and to all employees who volunteered their time to participate.
Through activities such as the AEC Zero Waste Action, we hope to continue building strong local relationships and contributing to the well-being of the communities we serve.
